LASIK Surgery improves the uncorrected vision, that is your vision without wearing corrective lenses. Over 90% of LASIK Surgery patients with low to moderate myopia will achive 20/40 vision. Over half of all patients can expect to achieve 20/20 vision or better. However, there are no guarantees that you will have perfect vision and results will depend on your circumstances.

Patients need to understand that their vision after LASIK Surgery may be different to their vision with corrective lenses. Some people describe the images they see after LASIK Surgery as not being as “crisp” as those seen through glasses.

Most patients who have LASIK Surgery do not need to wear corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses) for their daily activities. However, patients may need to wear reading glasses if they are over the age of 40. This is caused by the normal aging of the eye and occurs with or without LASIK Surgery.

LASIK (Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis) is a type of refractive laser eye surgery performed by ophthalmologists for correcting myopia (short sightedness), hyperopia (long sightedness), and astigmatism. An alternative to wearing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses, Lasik uses a laser to reshape the cornea of the eye so that it changes the focal point of the eye. The procedure takes around 15 minutes, is relatively pain-free and results are almost immediate.

The FDA website on LASIK clearly states: “Before undergoing a refractive procedure, you should carefully weigh the risks and benefits based on your own personal value system, and try to avoid being influenced by friends that have had the procedure or doctors encouraging you to do so.” As such, prospective patients need to fully understand all the potential issues and complications, as satisfaction is directly related to expectation.

LASIK Surgery can benefit a great number of people with myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Candidates should have a strong desire to be less dependent on corrective lenses, have established realistic expectations and understand the risks associated with LASIK Surgery.

There are a number of factors that the LASIK surgeon must evaluate before they can determine who is an eligible candidate for LASIK Surgery. Some doctors deem certain pre-existing conditions contraindications to the procedure and will not perform surgery if you possess them. Sometimes, factors exist that preclude a patient from being an ideal candidate for LASIK Surgery. In many cases, a surgeon may still be able to safely perform the LASIK Surgery, given that the patient and physician have adequately discussed the risks and benefits and set realistic expectations for results.
